AdBlue In Diesel

In Leicestershire we are identifying progressively more cases of AdBlue contamination where a motorist has put AdBlue directly into their diesel tank. This is partly due to people not being aware of the way to work with it (be aware: it's not a fuel additive), and partially because the filler caps for diesel and AdBlue are usually directly next to one another on the vehicle.

Now, what is the situation with having AdBlue in a diesel tank? Seeing that AdBlue is mostly deionised water, it's almost the same as putting water in your tank. Diesel and water do not ever mix in any way and attempting to run a diesel car on water cannot work. Additionally, the urea is seriously corrosive to fuel system pipes and seals and is more prone to crystalising, damaging injectors and filters.

Fuel contaminated with water

Water contaminated fuel, whether it's unleaded or diesel, is in many cases a significant situation to handle in a vehicle - especially in more modern common-rail engines. Water in the diesel or petrol is likely to lead to idling issues, lumpy running, increased smoke and, if it's not taken care of fully, oftentimes broken injectors. Having water in petrol is a lot easier to drain in comparison with water in diesel - primarily due to the fact that diesel is an oil. Having said that we are able to solve both cases quite expediently.

Take note though that so long as the vehicle has been run on the water contamination it will more than likely require a new fuel filter to be installed as the previous one will undoubtedly be thoroughly wet and unusable.
